S.A.F.E. House Programs & Services On May 1, 1976, five Albuquerque women met to hold the first meeting of the original Women's Community Association (WCA), now called S.A.F.E. House. Their purpose was to provide temporary shelter, services, and education for women and their children who were in a state of crisis as a result of physical; sexual; emotional/mental; or economic abuse and/or stalking. Since that time, S.A.F.E. House has expanded its services to all victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender. Services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Free Programs
Shelter From Domestic Violence: One of the largest shelters in the United States, we can house over 85 adult and child residents. Each year we provide safe shelter for between 800 and 1000 women, men, and children. A significant number of our residents are children. In fact, at any given time, approximately 60 percent of S.A.F.E. House residents are children.
The shelter offers a safe haven where residents receive three nutritious meals per day and snacks; clothing and toiletries; health care; individual and group counseling; employment and housing referrals; transportation; legal advocacy and information; counseling for children and parental support (also see Children's Program); and support from other residents who share similar experiences. Our goal is to provide quality care and effective services to educate and empower victims of domestic violence.
Resident Advocacy: Advocacy for survivors begins when they call our crisis line which operates 24/7/365. Advocates screen calls to ensure the services we offer will meet the caller's needs. Advocates help survivors arrange transportation to the shelter. Once a survivor is safely in the shelter, Resident Advocates ensure survivors are oriented to our facility, have clothing, and toiletries.
R.I.S.E. Transitional Housing Program: The R.I.S.E. Transitional Living Program provides long term support for families establishing violence free lives. This two year program provides case management and rental assistance for all participants. The purpose of this program is to provide the support and services needed for participants to become healthy, contributing members of our community when they leave the program.
Families in Transition Program: Our Families in Transition (FIT) program is designed to help non-abusive parents and children recover from the effects of violence. Support groups offer guidance in understanding and moving past the violence. The program also provides family-centered activities for the non-abusive parent s and children to help them learn safe and healthy ways of being a family. The FIT program provides children's programming and offers individual family coaching to enhance parent/child relationships. Our adult and child therapists provide trauma reduction and crisis intervention services. We also offer Parenting Support, Substance Abuse, Kid's Wellness Equine & Animal Therapy and Survivor Support Groups. We are proud to announce that SAFE House is also offering non-resident therapy. For more information on the FIT program please call Dale Klein-Kennedy at 505.247.4219 or

Community Education: Our Community Education Coordinator is available to provide information on domestic violence, the dynamics of domestic violence, and S.A.F.E. House programs and services. We provide education via presentations and booths throughout the community, including to businesses, schools, and civic organizations. We offer domestic violence and bullying puppet presentations for K-5th grade, teen dating violence presentations for middle and high school students, and domestic violence presentations for adults. For the last three years, Bernalillo County has had the highest number of domestic violence incidents and the highest number of domestic violence related homicides of any other county in New Mexico. We believe that, in conjunction with services, education is the key to ending the cycle of violence. If you would like to request a presentation or our participation in a community awareness event, please call Liceth Garcia at 505-328-1575 or e-mail lgarcia@safehousenm.org
Volunteers: The volunteer program is designed to link community members, who wish to give of their time and services, to the residents of S.A.F.E. House. We are always in need of volunteers and offer various opportunities. To view volunteer opportunities and requirements click How can I help? To get more information or to volunteer please fill out the online application and e-mail it to chollon@safehousenm.org, or contact Crystal Hollon at (505)247-4219 ext:28.
