An Amazing Experience

Volunteering for S.A.F.E. House is always an incredibly rewarding experience. You can volunteer alone or with a couple of friends. Take a look at our Community Partners Page or our Corporate Partners Page to see how your group, business, or organization can get involved.

Check out our different volunteer opportunities below!

Because of the nature of the work done at S.A.F.E. House, volunteers are required to follow certain standards, including:

  • The completion of a criminal background check

  • Adhering to the physical safety protocols

  • Adhering to confidentiality practices

  • Volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation

A note about background checks

Background checks require that potential volunteers complete detailed paperwork regarding their past living arrangements, education, and more, so the State of New Mexico can conduct the background check.

In addition, this background check is paid for when volunteers are registered for fingerprinting during orientation. Background checks cost $62.00. We ask that volunteers pay for their own background check. Once a volunteer has served 16 or more hours at S.A.F.E. House, they can be reimbursed if they choose.

Shelter

Volunteering in the shelter is incredibly rewarding! Volunteers assist our Resource and Service Specialists in the shelter by transporting residents, delivering meals, helping residents with requests, and more!

Events

Special Event and Fundraising Volunteers work with our board members and development staff to host amazing events and obtain donations.

Projects

Volunteers who are interested in completing a project for S.A.F.E. House can let our volunteer coordinator know when filling out the volunteer form! It's a great way to share special skills with the shelter.

Thriftique

Thriftique volunteers help sort donations and prepare them for sale in our store!

We'll warn you in advance - it's hard to go to Thriftique and not purchase some awesome goods! All proceeds from the thrift store help keep the shelter running!

Kitchen

Kitchen volunteers help in the kitchen by cleaning, serving, organizing, and more! It's a fantastic experience for anyone looking for a fun way to get involved!

Classes and  Services

We are always looking for ways to keep residents healthy and engaged!  If you teach classes (yoga, Jiu Jitsu, etc), or offer another area of expertise (hair cuts, chiropractor, legal services, etc) and would like to provide services to our residents, please contact

Ariana Harper at aharper@safehousenm.org

Crisis
Calls

Volunteers who are interested in handling crisis calls are imperative to helping our Resource and Service Specialists (RSS) give case management services to shelter residents.

Becoming a crisis call volunteer requires additional training which is offered once per month on a Saturday.

Facilities

Facilities volunteers help our maintenance crew with cleaning, landscaping, yardwork, etc. Keeping the shelter welcoming for our residents is such a vital part of what we do!

High
School

High school volunteers with community service requirements are welcome to serve at S.A.F.E. House.

If you are interested, please contact our Training & Volunteer Manager, Ariana Harper.
