Service Learning

Because of the ongoing increase in COVID-19 cases, we will be suspending all volunteerism at S.A.F.E. House at this time. Please follow us on social media and check back on our website as things progress.

A Unique Service Learning Experience

Completing your service-learning at S.A.F.E. House is a great way to end your high school career! High school seniors commit to working with S.A.F.E. House staff in four separate departments in equal increments. At the end of the service-learning project, participants are asked to write a 500-word essay about their experience!

Students will attend a volunteer orientation prior to beginning their experience. Volunteer orientation dates can be previewed on our Events Page.

Because of the nature of the work done at S.A.F.E. House, service learners must:

  • Be a senior in high school

  • Adhere to the physical safety protocols

  • Adhere to confidentiality practices

  • Attend a volunteer orientation

  • Be inoculated against COVID-19

  • Have a parent or legal guardian's signature to participate

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Gain an understanding of the mission, vision, and different services of S.A.F.E. House.

  • Recognize the realities and methods of overcoming intimate partner domestic violence.

  • Develop a stronger sense of professionalism by practicing punctuality and communication skills.

  • Learn how to exercise care when interacting with diverse and vulnerable populations.

  • Become comfortable asking thoughtful, and sometimes difficult, questions.

Volunteering in the shelter is incredibly rewarding! Volunteers assist our Resource and Service Specialists in the shelter by transporting residents, delivering meals, helping residents with requests, and more!

Special Event and Fundraising Volunteers work with our board members and development staff to host amazing events and obtain donations.

Want a different opportunity? Fill out volunteer form and we'll be in touch!

Thriftique volunteers help sort donations and prepare them for sale in our store!

We'll warn you in advance - it's hard to go to Thriftique and not purchase some awesome goods! All proceeds from the thrift store help keep the shelter running!

Kitchen volunteers help in the kitchen by cleaning, serving, organizing, and more! It's a fantastic experience for anyone looking for a fun way to get involved!

Volunteers who are interested in completing a project for S.A.F.E. House can let our volunteer coordinator know when filling out the volunteer form! It's a great way to share special skills with the shelter.

Volunteers who are interested in handling crisis calls are imperative to helping our Resource and Service Specialists (RSS) give case management services to shelter residents.

Becoming a crisis call volunteer requires additional training which is offered once per quarter on a Saturday.

Facilities volunteers help our maintenance crew with cleaning, landscaping, yardwork, etc. Keeping the shelter welcoming for our residents is such a vital part of what we do!

High school volunteers with community service requirements are welcome to serve at S.A.F.E. House.

If you are interested, please complete the volunteer questionnaire. Our volunteer coordinator will be in touch!
