Healthy, Nutritious Food

Maintaining a healthy, nutritious diet is key to our shelter residents ability to heal emotionally. While staying at the shelter, every resident receives three delicious meals prepared by our kitchen staff. Snacks are also available to residents during the day.

Menus

Our kitchen staff is responsible for the grocery shopping, cooking and serving. They work tirelessly to ensure that our residents have balanced meals.

Using guidance from MyPlate.gov, they are sure to include the correct amounts of:

  • Fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Grains

  • Dairy

  • Protein foods

In addition, residents with allergies receive specially prepared meals. The kitchen crew also prepares enough food for breakfast and lunch that staff members can enjoy one meal per day.

Education

Our Children's Program includes educating parents and children about a healthy diet.

This includes guidance on shopping on a budget and how to get kids excited about healthy, nutritious food. Our Children's Advocacy Coordinator works hard to ensure that parents have all the tools they need to provide their children with a healthy diet when they leave the shelter.

When survivors leave the shelter, they receive a move-out box. Included in these boxes are non-perishable food items to make the transition into housing easier.

Community members can help by donating non-perishable food items. Items can be dropped off at Thriftique.
